Youtube changed its look, and boy are people pissed

By Marc Bullard

YouTube changed its layout and features, some of which are aesthetically pleasing, while others….. well, let’s just say there’s some opinions as to how great these features are.

First off, on the home page the new layout looks nice. YouTube claims it will help find great channels when you first log in. On the left sidebar you can create your own, personal, customizable YouTube Channel line-up with options to connect to social networking sites, browse suggested channels, and view current subscription feeds. The way it works is if you click on one of the feeds on the left, the main middle section updates to show information on that feed.

Home page when you log into YouTube

Although nobody ever likes change, the YouTube community has been very vocal early on, expressing their ‘concern’ that the home page is confusing, cluttered, and “annoying”.

If that was the extent of changes, I don’t think there would be as much response as there actually is. YouTube also decided to “improve” user’s channel pages, with the goal of “helping users find great videos.” Users now have the option of changing their layout design to templates laid out by YouTube.

Take your pick

The goal was to streamline the channel and make it easier for others to find great videos. Although the layouts do look nice and clean, they have removed the option to move modules around and more importantly, the comment section, profile module, subscribers & friends module, and broadcast modules are now completely gone.

At one point YouTube was striving to be a “community” and these (missing) features made that apparent. Now, I’m not quite sure what YouTube is going for, maybe ad revenue?

Earlier in the year, YouTube let users try out an experimental design called Cosmic Panda, asking users to suggest feedback. Now, they’ve integrated the Cosmic Panda design and by some of the many negative comments expressed on YouTube’s blog, it looks like YouTube didn’t listen.

Feel free to check it out for yourself, and let your opinion be heard on the blog’s comment section. Hurry though, before they remove that as well.
